HOW TO BE AN OUTSTANDING MENTEE

So far this week, we have had some lovely discussion about what it is to be a mentor and mentee, as well as how to find and be an outstanding mentor. Today we’re going to talk all about how to actually be an OUTSTANDING mentee.

To be where I am today, I am absolutely the cumulative investment of a lot of generous, outstanding people. Part of how I express my gratitude to them for all that they have poured into me is by paying it forward and mentoring others. But with multiple mentorship requests each month and only 24 hours in a day, I’ve had to get savvy at deciding whom to say yes to for this personal and intentional relationship.

I’m excited to share with you today the top 4 qualities my favorite mentees exhibit that make me feel honored to be a part of their life and career journey and that I also look for when I’m approached by a mentee about the possibility of a mentoring relationship.

1. THEY ARE COACHABLE

Mentors help you achieve clarity through guidance and encouragement, so as an outstanding mentee, you can easily embrace and adapt the mentor’s advice. They’re able to do so because they’re confident and because they know how to solicit the feedback they NEED to hear, not just the feedback they WANT to hear. Coachable mentees have tons of delicious questions because they’re active learners who are comfortable with what they don’t know.

2. THEY “PESTER” THEIR MENTOR

If your mentor is outstanding, they don’t actually feel like the outstanding mentee is pestering them, but it’s a good thing if you FEEL like you are pestering them. Superstar mentees understand that it’s their job to drive the relationship. They’re proactive and diligent about following up. The yare diligent with keeping their mentor posted about how they are doing and how they are progressing in areas the yare working on together.

3. THEY HELP THEIR MENTOR

An outstanding mentee contributes to their mentor’s success in huge ways. They can help by doing anything from helping their mentor organize events, to research, and even babysitting! Good mentees know that elevating their and their mentor’s careers and life in general is a two-way street and it shows great honor to make your mentor present well in all situations.

4. THEY RUN THROUGH THE DOORS

THE MENTOR OPENS FOR THEM

They don’t walk…or skip…they RUN! When their mentor presents an opportunity, whether it’s an introduction to a person, access to an event, a speaking opportunity, or securing them a job interview, outstanding mentees knock it out of the ballpark. They show up on time & dressed appropriately, they’re prepared, they ask thoughtful questions, and they send thank you notes. They go the extra mile to honor the mentoring relationship.
